Title: Outside In: A Journey with Peace / Experience

Venue: Cells 5 & 6, Shepton Mallet Prison
Project Type: Site-Specific Installation

Materials: Paint

Year: 2023

Embarking on a journey with peace, I had the opportunity to transform two prison cells into temples of tranquillity.

Before starting the project, I used meditative techniques to find inner peace. Working from this state of mind, I remained present and focused on my body as I engaged in a movement meditation through various creative actions. I call this practice the ‘Art of Self Reflection: Peace Medicine’.

I wanted to see if I could bring ‘Peace Medicine’ to a place with a dark history. Shepton Mallet was the last prison to perform the death penalty and is known for ghost hunts. Many residents have ties to the prison, as former employees, or prisoners. Its central location occupies a foreboding physical presence in the town.

My ‘Peace Medicine’ process blended conscious gestures with shamanism and nature to create an unexpected sanctuary. I painted the walls and set up an Altar of Peace, creating a space for contemplation, beauty, and stillness. My inspiration came from a quote on the prison wall by Neville Chamberlain, urging for ‘peace in our lifetimes’. Visitors immediately felt at ease in the cells and were curious about how I had brought peace to a prison.

The project was a journey of self-discovery. Spending time alone at Shepton Mallet Prison allowed me to feel compassion for those who resided there, and to reflect on my struggles. The project taught me the importance of making peace with the past.
